working hards
The race and gender of Michelle Obama and the problems she faced because of them are a silver lining that shines through the entire book. When she was a child, she was told she would never attend an ivy league school because of the color of her skin. Her husband was told he could never be the president, because there had never been a black president before him. However, he learnt to overcome all those obstacles and push through. She wanted everyone to know that no matter the circumstances, young or old, black or white, one can reach their goals.
Holding the attention of the world
When Barack Obama became president, the whole life of the Obama family changed. They were now the center of attention from the whole nation, and things had to be done differently than they had been before. They couldn’t go on a normal date anymore, their children had to be monitored and their every step was spoken, discussed and analyzed. Being confident in oneself while all this pressure is pushing down the shoulders is an art, and an art that Michelle learnt to deal with gracefully.
Working hard
From the beginning of the book, Michelle was clear on one thing: she would do her best. Even though she didn’t necessarily come from the best side of town, her worth ethic stayed the same throughout her life. Her story was a clear portrayal of a fulfillment of the “American dream”, as she worked herself from the bottom to the top. Even when her teachers told her that her dreams were to far away to reach, she went beyond them. And it was all due to her work ethic.
