Would you give up being a person if you were constantly bleeding from unbroken skin? What would you be instead?
In the novel, Sophie relates a story about a woman who constantly bled from unbroken skin and to escape her bleeding, chose to turn into a butterfly. Can students imagine how difficult and frustrating it would be to bleed without any way to prepare for it or prevent it? What are some problems it might cause? Do students think they could live like that? If not, what would they want to be and why? Does their choice represent freedom to them?
