    Why does the author separate parts 3 and 4 here, even though there is no time jump?

    Previously the author changed sections when there was a significant time jump. Sophie went from age 12 to age 18, and then went from living in her mother's house to married with a child between previous sections. That doesn't happen with this section break. Ask students why they think that's the case. Have them look more closely at the previous sections and determine whether it really was a time jump that determined the breaks. What else did they have in common? The sections could also be broken up by setting--Part 1 in Haiti, Part 2 in New York, Part 3 in Haiti, Part 4 back in New York....
