Vianne Rocher
The main protagonist of the movie, and a chocolate connoisseur, who moves to France to open her chocolate store during Lent, which causes a stir amongst the town folks. She has a daughter, Anouk, born out of wedlock, and she is an outgoing personality, much to the chagrin of the other local ladies initially. However, her loving and kind personality wins them over eventually.
Roux
The main love interest of Vianne. He arrives at the town as a member of the Romani camp, and both quickly fall in love. Despite his feelings, he moves away after an incident, which causes Vianne much despair. However, he later returns towards the end of the movie in order to pledge his devotion to her and the two remain happily settled.
Comte de Reynaud
The mayor of the village and main antagonist of the film. He is a strict man and adheres to social convention and tradition. He has become much colder since his wife has left him. He see's Vianne as a threat to the stability of the town people and does everything in his efforts to overcome her.
Armande
An elderly woman who regularly visits Vianne's chocolate shop. She quickly befriends Vianne, who in turn, helps her to visit with her estranged grandson Luc, on secret visits to the chocolate shop. However, she is also a diabetic who denies her health issues and this is a basis of worry throughout the film.
Josephine
A young woman, trapped in an abusive relationship, Josephine lacks in self-confidence and strength within herself. However, she takes solace in Vianne's kindness and begins to help out in the shop. Eventually she finds her own courage to leave her husband for good.
