How is freedom from social constraints expressed in this movie?
Social convention and complying with tradition is a huge source of contest throughout this movie. Reynaud is adamant in enforcing this societal rule, and takes it upon himself to weed out any threats to the social structure. However, Vianne's presence disrupts this as she does not fall into line, but instead, directly opposes the dictatorial rule of Reynaud through her defiance. Vianne is everything Reynaud despises as she expels the notion of tradition through her very character - she has a child out of wedlock, she follows where the wind takes her rather than putting faith in God to guide her, and she tempts the people of the village. Her presence is the juxtaposition of everything Reynaud stands for.

How are women portrayed in the movie?
Josephine embodies the social convention of a housewife and she always adheres to what is expected of her rather than what she expects from herself. Alternately, Vianne is the polar opposite, and values freedom above social expectations. She follows where the wind takes her, and moves whenever she feels like it. She is also highly independent, being a single mother and business owner.
