Chapter 2
The chapter opens with a description of Bayardo San Roman. He arrives in town six months before the wedding and nobody knows much about him. He is well-liked in the town, though quite reticent. When he sees Angela on the street one day, he determines that she is the wife he's been looking for.
Bayardo does everything he can to win Angela's affection. She is not interested, but he charms her family through his gifts and wealth. When Angela's mother demands he "identify himself properly," he sends for his family to come visit. That's when the town learns that his father is the famous General Petronio San Roman.
