  1. 1

What is the significance of monsters in this film?

Guillermo del Toro creates a story that reveals a different light on monsters. Jesús is turned into a vampire through being pierced by the cronos which drinks his blood. But, it is Angel and De la Guardia that truly turn him into the appearance of a monster as they kill him, convince him to peel away his skin and stab him. Thus, the true monsters become the De la Guardias as in their greed seek eternal life, money and power and are willing to do anything, including taking life in order to get it. It is men who are the monsters, men who create the monsters and demand we become afraid of them in order to take our attention off of their wrongs.

How does the cronos find its way to Jesús?

Jesús comes into possession of the cronos accidentally. In 1536 an alchemist created it in order to have eternal life. Then, in 1937 he was killed when a building collapsed. He was inside and a wood stake went through his heart. When police went to his mansion they found basins of blood and a man being drained of his blood. This was never released to the public and all of the items he owned, including the house were sold. The cronos, though was never part of the inventory list. The alchemist has hidden it inside his statue of an archangel which was purchased by Jesús for his antique shop. When cockroaches began swarming out of a crack in the left eye of the piece he discovers the hollow bottom containing the cronos.

Why does Angel seem to care very little about retrieving the cronos?

Throughout the film we see Angel is upset with his uncle, he hates him. And, every time he goes out on an errand regarding the cronos he can't stand that he has to do so. The reason he seems to care very little if his uncle gets the cronos or not has to do with the fact that if his uncle retrieves it he will have eternal life. And eternal life means that Angel will never inherit his uncle's fortune. Thus, money and power fuel Angel's desire to ensure that his uncle does not get his hands on the cronos.
