    The story "Annie Mae" is told in the form of a diary entry by Granny. How does the structure of the story reflect its theme? Why are the revelations in the story told via diary entry instead of between characters?

    In "Annie Mae," Granny admits a loss of faith and her guilt over John Joseph's death. These facts deeply shame Granny, to the point that she cannot easily share them with another person. They can only be revealed in a diary that, presumably, no one else will read. When combined with John Joseph's ledger, the diary becomes a way that Granny can hold onto a connection with her grandson.
