    What did Mayor Giuliani say about the 9/11 death toll and how did it make the speaker feel?

    When asked by reporters about the death toll, Giuliani responded that it was "more than we can bear." The speaker found this surprisingly wise and true. It made her "turn and look at him as if for the first time." The actual number of the dead, three thousand, is "incomprehensible and ungraspable." Simply saying this number does not communicate the depth of the loss. The speaker compares the number to a sieve through with the loss leaks. A response like Giuliani's is the only way the immensity of the loss can be recognized.
