    The speaker is turning forty, and therefore her face is showing signs of age like wrinkles and mottled skin. This is considered unattractive and distasteful by society. Usually, aging is represented as a loss of youthful beauty, vitality, and sexuality, but the speaker connects aging to something deeper. She says that these lines show that she has squinted her eyes when seeing something unpleasant or turned her face to the sun in order to look away.
