The irony of Joan’s family
Joan's family is paradoxical. The family does nothing to help Joan look for her missing husband. Instead, the family members tell Joan to move on with her life. However, Joan is convinced that Victor is fine wherever he is, and she must continue searching. The paradox is that the family moves away from Joan when she needs it most.
The irony of Victor
Victor and Joan had been married for several years before he went missing. The main irony in their relationship is that a small argument about land annoys Victor to the extent of deciding to leave his home and family forever. According to Joan, she still loves her husband, and there are better ways of solving small issues, such as land disputes and other marital matters.
The irony of hope
When Joan hears a voice similar to Victor's, she feels excited and decides to enter the tent and see the husband she has been searching for the whole year. When she gets inside, she is optimistic and hopeful of hugging her husband after confirming that he is the one she has been searching for. Ironically, the man she believes is her husband fails to recognize her and says his name is Pastor Wolff. Joan's hope is squashed seconds after the reality hits her hard that the man does not recognize her.
