Empire of Wild Themes

Melancholy

The theme of melancholy is evident because the protagonist is unhappy. The protagonist's husband inexplicably went missing after arguing about the family property. The melancholy theme reminds readers of the significance of cherishing our loved ones while they are with us. For Joan, Victor's decision to leave home enduringly was the worst thing that happened in her life. Joan regrets confronting her husband over the disputed family property that forced him to abandon the family for good. Since the disappearance of Victor, Joan's health has continued to deteriorate because of depression.

Manipulation

The influential people in society use their privileges to exploit the poor. In the novel Empire World, Heiser is described as a wealthy man who has made his fortune through corrupt means. For instance, Heiser acquires large tracks of land through bribery. Heiser is a well-connected man in society, and he has friends in every ministry who help him to escape arrest any time. In addition, Heiser uses a lot of money to buy justice whenever he is arrested. Heiser is a reflection of what happens in society today. People who have power use their authority to manipulate and defraud the poor. Some of the victims of fraud in the novel include Cecil, who loses her property to corrupt people like Heiser.

Culture

Joan is brought up in the Métis community in Canada. The Métis community observes its traditional practices and religion. For instance, men are taught to be strong and bold enough to protect their families. On the other hand, girls are taught to be submissive and good mothers. When Joan gets married, she crosses the line when she argues with her husband. The husband walks away and never returns because he believes that a woman cannot confront a man in his society. The author stresses the significance of observing culture because it shapes an individual's character.
