Peter Shaffer was a renowned British screenwriter and playwright. He was born in Liverpool, England on May 15th, 1926, and he studied history on a scholarship at Trinity College, University of Cambridge. Before beginning his playwrighting career, Shaffer was a coal miner during World War II; afterward, he held various odd jobs, such as bookstore clerk and assistant at the New York Public Library. During the early years of his career he also worked as a literary critic.
