Existentialism Is a Humanism Irony

Existentialism Is a Humanism Irony

Dramatic irony: Sartre’s regret

Despite that fact that Sartre was one of the most well-known philosophers of the time, and indeed his work “existence precedes essence"is one of the greatest philosophical breakthroughs, he himself was a critic of his own work. He later went on to reject his very own ideas.

Dramatic irony: Sartre’s upbringing

Despite the strong ideas presented in this text about how man is not shaped by factors such as his environment or upbringing, Sartre himself was a privileged individual who had a great education and was born into an affluent family. It therefore begs the question to the reader: how can Sartre dispel the notion of upbringing being an influence of the essence?
