Study Objectives

If all of the elements of this lesson plan are employed, students will develop the following powers, skills, and understanding:

    Students will identify key themes in the novel and will trace their development, noting key points at which themes are incorporated and advanced.

    Students will study the narrative arcs of major characters, analyzing their choices, motivations, and traits.

  3. 3

    Students will creatively respond to the novel and will analyze scenes from the novel in different mediums.

  4. 4

    Students will be able to articulate the definition, importance, and characteristics of "Hardy's Wessex" for both the novel itself and southwest England as a region.
