Foe is written largely as a direct response to Robinson Cruso, and as such familiarity with Defoe's text will certainly help the study of Coetzee's.

Coetzee also references another Defoe novel, Roxana, with Susan Jr. In Roxana, the titular character is exposed as a liar by her daughter, also named Susan.
