Lily Casey Smith
She is the main character of the story and she is brought up in a rural set up in the West in the early 21st century. She is a no-nonsense lady with resourceful knowledge that enables her to withstand the tragedies of gender discrimination. She is a strong woman who knows her rights. She is brought up by a hardworking horse trainer and that is why she develops interests in horses from the early age. Her success in life is generally linked to her hard work and attitudes.
Daisy Mae Peacock/Mom Daisy
He is the boyfriend of Rosemary who later marries her. He works at an air force base. He is protective because when he first sees Rosemary, he starts protecting her from anybody who seemed with bad intentions.
Helen
She is Lily’s younger sister who is more like her mother. She is delicate and does not like doing manual jobs either. She does not like working on the ranch because she feels like that is not what she is supposed to do. She does not know what to do for her to be successful. She keeps on dating every other man and at last she gets pregnant with Hollywood producer who dumps her later on.
Jim Smith
He is the father to Rosemary and Little Jim. He is the second husband of Lily. He is a well-built man who was brought by a well-known Mormon with 52 kids. Jim started working hard since he was a young boy to build his future. He is twenty years older than Lily but she is attracted to him because of his strength.
Adam Casey/Dad
He is the father to Lily and in most part of the story he is referred as Dad. He has an impaired speech because when he was young, he was knocked by the Horse on the head. He finds it difficult to communicate because of this impairment. Ironically, he loves horses because he considers them to be more humane than even fellow human beings. He is a horse trainer and dedicates some of his time to train Lily. At the age of six, Lily already has a lot of knowledge regarding horses.
Rosemary
She is a daughter to Lily and Jim and she loves rose flowers, Catholicism and helpful herbs. When growing up, she is fearless and this makes her prone to accidents. Her mother is worried about her safety but she is fond her adventurous spirit. She loves animals and she find the ranch to be a good place for her.
Mother Albertina
She is mom superior in one of the Catholic institutions which Lily started to attend when she is thirteen years old. Lily loves Mother Superior because she treats all students equally without any form of favors.
Buster
He is the younger brother to Lily. He is happy, delightful, kind and motivated. He starts school at the age of ten. He is motivated that he needs education so that in future he can be meaningful to the ranch.
Rex Walls
He is the boyfriend of Rosemary who later marries her. He works at an air force base. He is protective because when he first sees Rosemary, he starts protecting her from anybody who seemed with bad intentions.
Dorothy Clemens
She is a daughter to Zachary. She is a big-bodied woman who is happy with her work. For instance, she is not scared of using her hands to do any kind of job in the ranch. She is later married to Buster and takes charge of the KC Ranch.
