Half Broke Horses Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Half Broke Horses

The title of the novel is itself symbolically used by the author to represent those individuals who cannot live within the confines of societal rules and traditions. Lily is among those people who stand out to follow their dreams despite the harsh societal criticism. Lily grows up when sexist attitudes towards women are intense. However, Lily is a robust woman who goes past the traditions to work hard and achieve her dreams. On a similar note, Lily calls Rosemary and Rex as half broke horses because they are inquisitive and want to live their lives without being dictated by societal regulations. Lily encourages them to live their lives and work towards achieving their dreams. Lily is also a teacher and she is encouraging her students not to live within the confines of traditions but embraces technology and work hard towards achieving their goals.

The Red Airplane

Jeannette Walls uses the red airplane to symbolize the evolution of modern technology. As Lily leaves the Red Lake, she sees a red airplane which shows that the world is making advances as far as technology is concerned. Throughout the novel, Jeannette Walls depicts Lily as the only character who embraces technology and adapts it. It is further indicated that a time shall come when embracing technology will not be an option but a necessity. It is also important to note that the red airplane cannot be stopped even by those who oppose technology. For instance, Dad is against modernity but it shall come a time when technology will be part of him.

Cars

Cars are used in the novel by the author to represent the negative part of technology. Modern technology has many benefits to American society but again, it has its dark sides. People initially thought that vehicles would bring freedom of easing movement but later that turns to be the opposite. For instance, people are stuck in traffic jams and no one can even manage to make a U-turn. Jams waste a lot of time and even those with emergencies cannot manage to get assistance in a good time. Therefore, despite being good, cars can be a nuisance because of heavy traffic jams and pollution of the environment.

The Symbol of Dad

Despite Dad being a character, Jeannette Walls uses him as a symbol to represent the ancient society. Dad is against modernity because he believes that the primary aim of modern technology is to disrupt the ancient societal order. Lily believes that a day shall come when Dad will have no option but to embrace modern technology. For instance, the movement will have to be made using vehicles, planes, and trains. The good thing according to Lily is that not even Dad can stop the evolution of modern technology.

The Symbol of Lily

Jeannette Walls passes a strong message to the world using Lily as a symbol of a woman's strength in a man's world. Despite the restrictions and traditions of society, Lily stands firm to chase her dreams and at last, she becomes a successful woman. The author is demonstrating that given a chance, a woman can perform better in every aspect. For instance, the young Lily is in charge of the family ranch and she does marvelous work. Despite knowing that she won't inherit it due to cultural norms, she gives it her best.
