The Imagery of the Cows’ Sensitivity

Lily recounts, “It was late on an August afternoon, the air hot and heavy like it usually was in the rainy season…But when we got there, those girls ( Cows) were acting bothered. Instead of milling around the gate, like they usually did at milking time, they were standing stiff-legged and straight tailed, twitching their heads around and listening. Buster and Helen looked up at me, and without a word, I knelt down and pressed my ear to the hard-packed dirt. There was a rumbling, so faint and low that you felt it more than you heard it. Then I knew what the cows knew- a flash flood was coming.” Manifestly, the cows exhibit extraordinary sensitivity by detecting the forthcoming flash floods before the children can detect them. Had the cows not sensed the floods, they and the children would have been washed away. Accordingly, the cows are intelligent and endowed creatures which ought to be underrated.

The Imagery of a Dugout

Lily recalls, “The best thing about living in the dugout was that it was cool in the summer and not too cold in the winter. The worst thing about it was that, from time to time, scorpions, lizards, snakes, gophers, centipedes and moles wormed their way out of our walls and ceilings. Once, in the middle of an Easter dinner, a rattler dropped onto the table. Dad, who was carving the ham, brought the knife right down behind that snake’s head.” The technology employed in converting the dugout into a home is impressive for it provides an optimal ambiance especially during the winter. However, the dugout is in invitation to various creatures some of which are deadly. The imagery of a snake alludes to the omnipresent nuisance from the wildlife which get into the dugout. Therefore, the dugout is not absolutely comfortable for the family.
