    Analyzing the Chorus as Poetry

    Kind of Activity:

    Group Work

    Objective:

    To identify poetic devices in the text and to analyze the text's poetic aesthetics

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.11-12.4, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.11-12.1

    Structure:

    Working in small groups, students will each take a portion of the opening Act III chorus and analyze its use of poetic devices. Divide the text into 5-10 line sections and assign each group a portion. Each group needs to do the following:

    -scan their passage

    -identify moments of figurative language

    -analyze notable line breaks

    -discuss its overall aesthetic effect
