Section III
On the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard, Herzog composes a letter to his lover Ramona, while also thinking about their relationship. Romona is as sensual as she is intelligent, which Herzog prefers to Madeline. However, she wants to be married to Herzog, and he’s not interested in getting married again. Next, Herzog writes a critical letter to an academic called Shapiro, while recalling frustration with his rival.
Herzog recalls meeting with Sandor Himmelstien, who agrees to represent him and help him get custody of June. The easily angered Sandor often berates Herzog for his failures, and also insists that he get insurance.
