How is Herzog’s tone different in the final section of the novel? What accounts for this change in perspective?
Herzog is far more reflective and kind in the final section. On a plot level, this change comes from his response to the car crash and the temptation to commit murder, both of which showed him how far he was willing to go. On a thematic level, Herzog is in nature, which provides a sense of peace and perspective for him. Finally, his letter writing greatly diminishes in the last section, which shows him getting out of his head more.
