    Stanley observes that a rattlesnake would be a lot more dangerous without its rattle. How might this observation apply to characters in the book?

    Mr. Sir may be scary, but at least Stanley knows when he's mad. The warden, on the other hand, strikes without warning. She scratches Mr. Sir without a second thought, before he can see it coming. Stanley can't be sure what the warden wants, or what she'll do if he incurs her wrath. Students may want to compare other characters to the rattlesnake as well – who warns before they strike? Who keeps quiet?
