    A “Hole” Lot of Symbolism

    Individual Writing

    Objective:

    Examine the symbolism of holes in 'Holes.'

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.1, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.4, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.9-10.1

    Structure:

    In this classroom activity, students should look at all of the references to holes in the text, including, but not limited to, the ones dug at Camp Green Lake. Have students make lists of things that the holes might symbolize.

    The should consider the different circumstances in which holes are dug, the characters' individual relationships to holes (especially Zero and Stanley), and what the results of the holes are. For example,...
