Hood Feminism Lesson Plan

Relationship to Other Books

This book responds to and engages with works like Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg and Girl Boss by Sophia Amuroso which speak to audiences about female empowerment through corporate success and financial freedom - which largely ignores the group of women that Mikki Kendall advocates for - women who do not have access or aspirations to these models of success. Kendall also builds upon the narratives of black women that are exemplified by the writings of Alice Walker such as The Color Purple and Toni Morrison such as Beloved that tell the stories that mainstream feminism ignores.
