Frenchie
Frenchie is the main character in the novel. As the novel opens, Frenchie is detained in a residential school. When Frenchie wakes up, he discovers the authorities have captured him to harvest his bone marrow.
The terrifying thing Frenchie discovers is that his brother, Mitch, is alive and working for the residential school to capture indigenous children. Frenchie is terrified because many years ago, Mitch died as a sacrifice to save him from the killers. Mitch now tells Frenchie to join him to work for the institution.
Mitch
Mitch is Frenchie's older brother. When Frenchie was ten, Mitch sacrificed his life to save him. Frenchie is shocked to learn that Mitch is alive and working for the residential schools that target indigenous children.
Rose
Rose is a dedicated woman who wants to be free of spirits. Rose wants to escape from her uncle's creepy sex cult. Rose must have a two-sided spirit to compel her uncle not to follow her. Rose hopes for a better future after she escapes from her uncle.
Miig
Miig acts as a father to the group of Indigenous children called Ragtime. Miig has adopted these eight children, and he speaks a language they all understand. Miig teaches his adopted children hunting skills. However, when the agents of the Indigenous people betray Miig, he runs away. Unfortunately, Miig is captured and taken to the residential school awaiting his bone marrow to be harvested. Luckily, Miig manages to escape.
Wab
Wab is the most beautiful woman in Frenchie's family. Wab is the eldest daughter in her home and decides which sibling should complete any particular task at any given point. However, Wab prefers to complete most tasks by herself.
Chi-Boy
Chi-boy is the oldest boy in Frenchie's family and the tallest. Chi-boy is a quiet boy who rarely socializes with the rest of the family members. Chi-boy knows how to patrol the forest without leaving a trail for recruiters who hunt for the Indigenous children. Chi-boy loves Wab, and he does everything to protect her
