The harmful legacy of residential schools
The readers of "Hunting by Starts" do not need to be Canadians to comprehend the historical background of this poem. It is evident in the poem that residential schools are agencies that conduct evil practices. These schools are traps for kidnapping indigenous children and handing them to the government. The government agencies harvest the bone marrow of the kidnapped kids to use them for medical experiments. According to the poem's speaker, the best thing to do to these residential schools is to destroy them. Unfortunately, the characters are still young, but when they grow up, they intend to obliterate the residential schools because they do not benefit them.
Family
Family is one of the major themes in the poem because, despite the characters coming from different tribes, they collaborate as family members. The characters have shared thoughts about climate change and their future. According to the characters, their primary goal is to prevent the evils of climate change and ensure they have a better future. The reader can conclude that Dimaline met these children and captured their thoughts before writing this novel. Despite their young age, the children in this novel live in harmony and are thoughtful of the well-being of each other. Consequently, the characters in the novel are a chosen family, ready to die while defending each other.
