The unnamed narrator is the novel's protagonist. The narrator is of Asian origin trapped in England after America closes its borders. The narrator is an intelligent and talented chef. Throughout her life, the narrator has worked as a professional chef, and her latest assignment is to cook for a group of elite research community at an Italian mountain top holiday destination.
The author describes the narrator as a sharp woman who quickly studies her new environment. After working for a few days, the narrator discovers that she is imprisoned and her sole purpose is not to cook for the elite. The employer and other elite people in the vacation mountain are scheming on how to survive if the world ends. The narrator also discovers that her employer's wife was Asian, who vanished mysteriously.
Unnamed entrepreneur (employer)
The unnamed entrepreneur is the narrator's employer. The entrepreneur is creative, focused, and future-oriented. The author compares the entrepreneur to Elon Musk because he wants to innovate after-life survival mechanisms. The unnamed entrepreneur owns the Italian mountain vacation place where the elite researchers congregate to conduct their business.
Aida
Aida is the daughter of the unnamed entrepreneur. Aida is brilliant, focused, and loving. Aida resembles her Asian mother, who is very beautiful. Aida and the unnamed narrator (the chef) form a close relationship because they share many things. Through Aida, the narrator discovers she is not at the Italian mountain to cook lavish meals. The narrator is imprisoned for her appearance because she looks like the unnamed entrepreneur's wife, who is Asian by origin.
