    Students will be able to use family history as Taylor does

    Structure:

    Ask students to read the dedication of the book. Discuss it. Do the students see the book differently knowing that Stacey and Papa are partially based on Taylor's father? What does this knowledge mean to them? Why do they think Taylor chose to write the book?

    Next, look up Mildred D. Taylor's Newbery Award acceptance speech. This is a historical novel, you should note: Taylor wrote it in the 1980s about the 1930s. Why...
