As the boys prepare to approach Jack and his tribe at Castle Rock, what do you think of Ralph’s statement, “‘We’ll be like we were’” (Ch 11)?
Ralph’s statement reflects his futile desire to return to the brief period of order they achieved at the beginning of the novel. He wrongly believes that they can reclaim their more civilized and socialized habits. At this point, Ralph has failed to recognize the full extent to which their lives have been irrevocably altered. Order and law are now impossible because Jack’s savagery has infected all of the tribe. Simon’s death is a clear marker of their transformation from any semblance of civilization to brute savagery.
