Kimberlé Crenshaw is an important scholar in Black feminism and critical race theory, an academic field that explores how race, law, and power function in society. Critical race theory emerged as a defined field in the 1980s. Crenshaw’s work has been significant to how the field has developed over the years.
Crenshaw was born in Ohio in 1959. She attended Cornell University and then Harvard Law School. After law school, she worked for a Wisconsin Supreme Court judge. During this time, she increased her knowledge of constitutional law. She later became a law school professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she continues to teach and research.
