New Moon Essay Questions

Essay Questions

  1. 1

How does the introduction of Jacob put a strain on the (originally) idealistic relationship between Bella and Edward?

The introduction of a romantic rival in New Moon creates a sense of contrast as well as a competitive element that was originally absent in the first book. While there were mentions of other characters taking a romantic interest in Bella, there was no real romantic rival. The introduction of Jacob created a love triangle that was missing in the first text.

  2. 2

How does the author make use of contrast to exemplify the difference between the two romantic rivals?

From a physical perspective, Jacob and Edward are described to be near opposites. Jacob is brown-skinned, broad with long hair where as Edward is lean and pale-skinned. The dramatic visual contrast between the two instantly invokes a desire to compare. Furthermore, the turning of Jacob into a werewolf (the long sworn enemies of the vampires) further emphasizes Jacob and Edward as polar opposites. Therefore, Bella's choice between Jacob and Edward becomes dramatized to near epic proportions.
