New Moon Irony

New Moon Irony

St. Marcus Day and Edward’s suicide

When Alice and Bella comes to Volterra to save Edward from the suicide, people celebrate St. Markus Day. “As the legend goes, a Father Marcus drove all the vampires from Volterra fifteen hundred years ago.” In addition, “vampires do not trouble Volterra.” People think Volterra is an amazingly safe city. The police get the credit. The irony is that police are not going to be very happy if Edward messes things up for them and inhabitants will find out that vampires exist during St. Marcus Day.

Fatal film

Bella and her friends decide to go to the cinema. The rest of the movie is comprised of gruesome zombie attacks and endless screaming from the handful of people. “The scene keeps cutting between the horrified face of the heroine, and the dead, emotionless face of her pursuer, back and forth as it closes the distance.” Then Bella realizes which one resembles the most. Bella tries very hard not to think of the irony. However, it is ironic, all things consider, that, in the end, Bella will wind up as a zombie.

Helplessness to the limit

During the birthday, Bella is beginning to open her gifts. Edward is sitting in the center of her bed, toying idly with one of the silver boxes. Suddenly, Bella picks up the long flat rectangle. “Edward takes the gift from her hand and tears the silver paper off with one fluid movement.” He hands the rectangular white box back to Bella. Then she ironically asks if “he is sure, she can handle lifting the lid”. It is an irony, because Edwards thinks Bella is so helplessness that she even will not be able to open the box.
