New Moon Imagery

Reflection in the mirror

Once Bella has a dream, where she sees her grandmother. Her face looks just the same as Bella remembers it. The skin is “soft and withered with a thousand tiny creases." It is like “a dried apricot”, but with “a putt of thick white hair standing out in a cloud around it.” Their mouths spread into the same surprised half-smile at just the same time. Then Bella realizes that this old woman is she. The imagery of the old woman gives an impression of Edward’s future girlfriend, if he does not turn Bella into a vampire.

The pain of being abandoned

Love, life and meaning are over for Bella, when Edward leaves Bella after their long relations. “With shaky legs”, ignoring the fact that Bella’s action is useless, she follows him into the forest. “There are no footprints and the leaves are still again.” It feels like “time has frozen, because the forest looks the same” no matter how far Bella goes. Tonight the sky is “utterly black”. The rain bothers Bella a little. “It is cold.” The imagery of the nature and weather, when Edward abandons Bella, gives an impression of her dark, lonely and abandoned soul.

A place with pleasant memories

Bella often visits the place, where she and Edward had a good time. It is a place, where Bella has never seen another clearing so symmetrical. It is as “perfectly round” as if someone has intentionally created “the flawless circle, tearing out the trees but leaving no evidence of that violence in the waving grass.” To the east, Bella can hear “the stream bubbling quietly.” The place is not nearly “so stunning without the sunlight”, but it is still “very beautiful and serene.” The imagery of the glade gives an impression of perfect memories about Bella’s love.

Werewolves

When Bella sees Jacob’s friends-werewolves for the first time, they are not what Bella is expecting. These are just “four big half-naked boys.” Again, they remind Bella of brothers, quadruplets. Something about the way, they move almost “in synchronization” to stand across the road from Bella and Jacob, the way they all have “the same long, round muscles under the same red-brown skin, the same-cropped black hair”, and the way their expressions alter at exactly the same moment. “They start out curious and cautious.” The imagery of werewolves gives an impression of force, power and fear.
