Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist Metaphors and Similes

Connection (Metaphor)

Sometimes, in order to understand a person and his or her inner world, it is enough to learn the playlist of his or her music. Nick and Norah are very different, but at the same time, they are similar. They have the same addiction to music. Music is their life. When Nick’s music does not inspire anyone, Norah can be inspired by it. Music is a metaphor of Nick and Norah’s connection. This connection helps them to find each other and share their interests.

Like a ghost (Simile)

When Norah is in the club, trying to find her best friend Caroline, she looks around and sees the set mass of people swarm past/through/into her “like she is a ghost with the inconvenience of malleable flesh”. It means that no one notices her and Norah feels uncomfortable and lonely.

Like a form of clasping (Simile)

Love between Nick and Norah is very special. As Nick says, their “kiss is like a form of clasping” that makes them happy. This comparison shows that their love is a chemical reaction and they can feel true love between each other. This clasping gives them happiness.
