    Deconstruct the title "Self-Portrait as Exit Wounds." What does it mean for a person to see themselves in this way?

    If the person himself is the exit wounds, that means that they are the end result of damage that has already been done. This might refer to the fact that the speaker's mother might have been the result of a rape, certainly of a sexual encounter with unequal power between partners; that the United States, where the speaker's family clearly makes their home, instigated and perpetrated much of the violence of the Vietnam War; or simply that the speaker feels he was the end result of his family and his country/countries being in great pain.
