Maria "Cabiria"
Maria is a prostitute who's been betrayed by her boyfriend Giorgio who has stolen her money and nearly drowned her by pushing her into the water. She dreams of a better life, one that doesn't involve sleeping with unknown men to earn a living. She has a gentle spirit that we see come out when she is hypnotized at the magic show. She is also incredibly strong and able to endure much throughout this difficult journey.
Wanda
Wanda is Maria's best friend who lives near her. She is also a prostitute, but she cares deeply for Maria and wants the best for her even if it means not being able to see her friend again.
Oscar
Oscar is a man that Maria meets after a magic show she attends. Oscar falls in love with Maria and proposes to her. He tells her he's purchased a store for them to run, as well as a new home in a new city. We come to find out that Oscar is willing to kill Maria in order to take her money.
