Colonel Aureliano Buendía’s premonitions might represent the randomness of life and the futility in trying to predict one’s future. He has strong feelings and blurred visions that on occasion save his life. But, as the narrator says, he cannot systematize the premonitions. In his inability to harness this power, he has to surrender to the randomness of life. It is telling that his waves of “supernatural lucidity” do not help him escape the fate that is foretold in the first line of the book.
