What is Ruth's profession? What textual evidence do we have of this?
Ruth is a prostitute. When Rabbit originally asks Ruth what she does, her response is "nothing." She is evasive on the matter of how she knows one of Rabbit's old teammates, Ronnie Harrison. Tothero directly refers to Ruth's friend Margaret, who brought her on the date, as a tramp. When Ruth and Rabbit are left alone in the restaurant and are discussing the cost of her apartment, she says it is expensive, especially now that her roommate got married. Rabbit again mentions about her not having a job, and she wonders aloud how wise he is—Rabbit then gives her fifteen dollars toward her rent and bills....
