Objective:

Students will create a guide to the setting of the novel.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.11-12.3

Structure:

To begin the activity, explain to students that it is common in Gothic literature to focus on architecture and for the setting to act as a character. Manderley is no exception. The characters speak about Manderley as if it is alive. The house and the grounds have different feelings attached. Ask students what words they would use to describe Manderley. Make a list of these words on the board. Students might choose words like dark, fear, beautiful, ominous, overwhelming, huge, and more....
