How would you describe Maxim and the narrator’s relationship at this point?
Maxim and the narrator’s relationship is similar to a father and daughter. Maxim looks out for her and says he enjoys being around her, but he keeps his distance. Students may point out that the relationship does not feel particularly passionate or romantic. They may even suggest that Maxim seems like he is hiding something, especially in those moments when he is clearly transported to an unpleasant memory. The level of attraction the narrator describes seems to be mostly on her end.
