Rebecca was written by Daphne Du Maurier in the summer of 1937. She had already achieved literary acclaim by this point. The novel was inspired by her real-life circumstances. She had to leave England because of her husband’s work with the military. Du Maurier left her two daughters in England with a nanny and went with her husband to Egypt. While she was in Egypt, she was unhappy and homesick and she began to write this novel about a couple that is in a kind of self-imposed exile away from the place they call home.
