    Why does Dr. Adler disapprove of his daughter's artwork? How does this differ from his disapproval of Wilhelm?

    Dr. Adler is skeptical of his daughter's desire to continue pursuing artwork even after her marriage. He says, "I was glad enough to buy crayons for her when she was four. But now she's a woman of forty and too old to be encouraged in her delusions." Part of this is tied up in his skepticism of the arts in general - he was never supportive of Wilhelm's desire to be an actor, either. But there also seems to be an element of sexism at play. He would prefer that she "let her husband pamper her" - that is, part of the reason why she should give up art at this point...
