River tells the Sunshine Woman that Richie is too young to know the things she is telling them. She is angry with him and leaves them standing there. This leads Richie to understand that "what Riv and Sunshine Woman did wasn't an expression of love, but Riv's standing in the sun for me was." For a young boy, this idea of love separate from romance and sexuality is hugely meaningful. Jojo and Kayla also share this type of love, one that is familial and protective.
