Brianna Flowers

Brianna Flowers is a hardworking and resourceful mother who is willing to make sacrifices in order to give her son, Malik, the best future possible. She is kind, giving her last $600 to her son so he can attend a basketball tournament in Seattle, despite the fact that she may not be able to repay the loan she took out to cover the cost. She is also tough, having dealt with an abusive ex-boyfriend in the past.

Brianna is determined to make a better life for herself and her son, and she is willing to make difficult decisions to accomplish this. She is also devoted to her family, as evidenced by her affection for her son and her determination to assist her forefathers. George and Cora Flowers, in their tragic love story.

Walter Bergen

Walter Bergen is a hardworking and dedicated engineer who is well-known for consistently running his train safely. He is an experienced and confident professional who is facing the end of his career. Walter is a devoted family man who adores his daughter but is struggling to adapt to a rapidly changing world. He is a caring person who is willing to take risks to help those in need, such as when he assists Laila Tully in fleeing her abusive ex-boyfriend.

Walter is a man of integrity and a strong sense of responsibility, as evidenced by his determination to safely transport his passengers to their destinations. He is also a man of deep faith and spirituality, believing in a higher power and the importance of living a meaningful life.

Malik

Malik Flowers, Brianna's son, is a pre-teen basketball player. He is a high achiever who is driven and enthusiastic about the game of basketball. Despite his youth, he has already established himself as a team leader who is respected and admired by his peers. He works hard and goes above and beyond to achieve his objectives. He is also very loyal and supportive of his mother, Brianna, and will go to any length to make her proud. Furthermore, Malik is very sensitive and caring to those around him, even if he does not always show it on the surface.

Miwok

Miwok are native people of California, and they have a rich culture and history. Miwok people are known for their strength and perseverance, as well as their resilience in the face of adversity. Miwok characters demonstrate these traits by showing their ability to persevere and adapt to difficult circumstances, even when those circumstances threaten their safety and well-being.

Jenny Chen

She is also responsible and reliable, as she is partly responsible for the early retirement that Walter is taking from Amtrak.

Jenny is also generous, as she shows understanding and empathy toward her children's needs and wants. She is also resourceful, being able to come up with creative solutions to problems. Finally, despite being economically comfortable, Jenny is not selfish and is aware of the suffering of others, which is why she goes out of her way to help them.

Washoe

Washoe is a waitress from a small town and is a descendant of Miwok and Washoe's ancestors. She is determined to make a better life for herself which is why she is fleeing from her abusive white boyfriend and her hometown. She is also very generous and kind-hearted as she helps her co-worker, Laila, to escape from her abusive boyfriend.

Washoe is also resilient, as she does not give up on her dreams of a better life and is willing to take risks to ensure her dreams come true. She shows a deep sense of loyalty to her friends, demonstrated when she gives her waitress friend, Tam, money she had been saving for months in order to help her.

Laila Tully

Laila Tully is a young woman of Miwok and Washoe ancestry who is traveling to Seattle by train. She is fleeing her abusive white boyfriend and her hometown on a shoestring budget. She is also compassionate and generous, as she is eager to assist fellow travelers in need and is frequently the first to offer assistance. She is a trustworthy friend with a strong sense of justice, as she is willing to confront injustice and fight for what is right. Laila is also a survivor because she has been able to endure and overcome adversity in her life.

Cora Flowers

Cora is a strong-willed woman who has left her comfortable Chicago life to join George Flowers, who has escaped slavery. Cora is brave, determined, and self-sufficient. She is gracious to George, but she is taken aback when he proposes to her. Despite societal norms, Cora is determined to make her own decisions and follow her own path. Cora is a woman of integrity and strength who is an inspiring example of someone who is willing to take risks and pursue their dreams.

George Flowers

He is a runaway slave who escaped to the West in the 1850s and is attempting to make a new life for himself. He is a determined, courageous, and resourceful individual who frequently puts himself in danger to protect those he cares about. He is also a romantic, with a deep and abiding love for Cora, the woman he wishes to marry.

George is a hardworking and practical man who is willing to take risks and make sacrifices for the greater good. He is devoted to and protective of those he loves, and he is willing to fight for what he believes in.

Wu Chen

Wu Chen is a Chinese immigrant who is haunted by the past. He is a hardworking and loyal individual who puts family and friendship above all else. He is also a risk-taker, willing to take bold chances in order to create a better future for himself and those around him. He is courageous and resilient, having survived difficult circumstances and kept faith in his dreams. Despite his struggles, Wu Chen maintains a positive outlook on life and never loses hope in his journey toward a better future.

Nora Bergen

Nora is a young woman living in the 1850s who is struggling to be reunited with her brother, Finn, after they were separated during a difficult family journey from New York to California. Nora is a strong and determined character, driven by her desire to find her brother and her unyielding optimism that she will. She is a woman of deep faith and compassion, who believes in the power of love to bring people together and heal their pain. Nora is also brave, willing to take risks, and make tough decisions in order to be reunited with Finn.

Worthy Warnock

Worthy Warnock is George Flowers' captor and serves as a foil to him. He is a white man who believes in the power of the transcontinental railroad to bring people together. Worthy is a rather arrogant character, believing he has all the answers and that his views should be followed without question. He is also very controlling and uses his power in a manipulative way. He never shows any remorse for the way he treats people and is blind to George's suffering. Despite this, he does have a soft side, which George is able to see. He is also loyal to his friends and will do anything to protect them.

Finn Bergen

He is Nora's twin brother, and the two are separated in the 1850s. Finn is described as a determined and resilient character, who never gives up hope of reuniting with his beloved sister. He is also kind and compassionate, as he helps a fellow traveler and her child during his travels. He is also very resourceful, as he uses his skills as a carpenter to build the railroad that connects the East and the West. Finally, Finn is generous, as he is willing to share what little he has with those in need.
