Structure:
A major theme of Song of Solomon is the experience of Black people, especially Black men, in a racist society that denies their personhood. The scholar and writer W.E.B. Du Bois coined the highly influential term "double consciousness" to explain the contours of this experience, and understanding this concept is helpful in understanding the themes of the novel.
