In keeping with the title of the memoir, how does Hsu “stay true” to his own characterization, despite parts that might be unflattering? What effect does this have on readers?

He makes sure readers are clear that as a young adult, he was pretentious, judgmental, and in many ways unpleasant. He could have downplayed these elements, but he’s being true to who he was at the time by sharing these intimate details about himself, including examples of his private thoughts that are definitely not flattering to his personality....
