Stephen Crane: Selected Poems Character List

The creature in the desert

At one point in the poem “In the Desert” the narrator addresses a creature he stumbles upon, and seeing that it eats its heart asks about it. The creature likes to eat its own heart despite the bitterness.

The man speaking to the Universe

In a short poem that conveys a much deeper message, the main character is the man addressing the Universe reminding “him” of his existence. The man is a representation of the humanity and the embedded self-importance.

A man pursuing the horizon

A man pursuing the horizon from the poem "I saw a man pursuing the horizon" is a representative of all the dreamers who dream big despite the odds being against them and the improbability of ever reaching their goals.
