Stephen Crane: Selected Poems Poem Text

The impact of a dollar upon the heart

Smiles warm red light

Sweeping from the hearth rosily upon the white table,

With the hanging cool velvet shadows

Moving softly upon the door.

-excerpt, The impact of a dollar upon the heart

I saw a man pursuin the horizon;

Round and round they sped.

I was disturbed at this;

I accosted the man.

-excerpt, I saw a man pursuing the horizon

“But I like it

“Because it is bitter,

“And because it is my heart.”

-excerpt, In the Desert
