Bill
Bill is in his late twenties. He enters a cafe and then strikes up a conversation with Betty, many times. There are two ways to interpret Bill: Either Bill is one character who repeatedly adjusts his approach and identity until he achieves a successful outcome; or there are multiple Bills with different identities and so different inherent possibilities for success.
One example of the many lives of Bill is his education: In different conversations with Betty, he variously went to Oral Robert University, didn’t go to college, and went to Harvard.
Betty
Betty is in her late twenties. She is reading The Sound and the Fury at a cafe table with an empty chair. Like Bill, Betty may be interpreted as either one character adjusting her identity, or as many characters contained in one.
An example of the many lives of Betty is her relationship status: In different conversations she is married to a man, breaking up that night, meeting her lesbian lover, recently broken up, and simply single.
